Family Reunification in Italy

Family reunification in Italy allows foreign citizens legally residing in Italy to bring certain family members to the country, protecting family unity. Below are the requirements and the main steps to apply.

1. Who Can Apply for Family Reunification?

You can apply for family reunification in Italy if you are a foreign resident in Italy and you hold:
✔️EU long-term residence permit or a residence permit valid for at least 1 year for:

• Employment or self-employment
• International protection
• Family reasons
• Study or research

2. Which Family Members Can Be Reunited?

You can apply for reunification for:
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Spouse (not legally separated and over 18 years old)
🧒 Minor children (including the spouse’s children, if unmarried and financially dependent)
👴 Parents if:

• They are over 65 years old and have no other children in the country of origin able to support them
• Or they are fully dependent and do not have adequate means of support

3. Requirements for the Applicant

✔️Minimum income required (2025)

• About €10,504.45 per year to reunite with 1 family member
• + €3,501.42 for each additional family member
• If you apply for reunification with both parents, the required income increases.

✔️Suitable accommodation

• The home must meet the hygiene and habitability requirements established by Italian law.
• You need a housing suitability certificate issued by the Municipality.

4. How to Submit the Application

✔️Step 1: Request for Nulla Osta

1. Register on the Italian Ministry of the Interior portal (Single Immigration Desk).
2. Fill out the online form and attach the required documents.
3. Wait for the appointment at the Prefecture’s Single Immigration Desk.
4. If everything is in order, the Nulla Osta is issued within 90 days.

✔️Step 2: Entry Visa for the Family Member

1. Once the Nulla Osta has been issued, the family member must apply for a visa at the Italian Embassy or Consulate in the country of origin.
2. Once the visa is granted, the family member can enter Italy.

✔️Step 3: Residence Permit

1. Within 8 days of arrival in Italy, the family member must apply for a residence permit for family reasons at the Police Headquarters (Questura).
2. After the review process, the permit is issued and the family member can legally live in Italy.

5. Processing Times

⏳ Waiting time: the Nulla Osta is generally issued within 90 days, although timing may be longer if additional checks are required.
