Italian Citizenship by Residency

Italian citizenship by residency can be requested by foreign citizens who have legally lived in Italy for a period established by law. Below are the main steps to apply:

1. Check the Requirements

To apply for Italian citizenship by residency, you must:
✔️ Have lived legally and continuously in Italy for:

• 10 years if you are a non-EU citizen.
• 4 years if you are an EU citizen.
• 5 years if you are stateless or a recognized refugee.
• 3 years if you are a descendant of an Italian citizen up to the second degree (grandparents) or if you were born in Italy.
• 5 years for those who have served the Italian State.

✔️ Have a minimum income for the last three years (generally at least €8,263.31 per year, plus additional income if family members are dependent).
✔️ Have no serious criminal record.
✔️ Demonstrate knowledge of the Italian language at least at B1 level (certificate issued by a recognized institution).

2. Collect the Required Documents

The main documents required include:
✔️Valid ID document and valid residence permit.
✔️Historical residence certificate issued by the Municipality.
✔️Criminal record certificate from your country of origin with sworn translation.
✔️Income documentation (CU, 730 form or tax return for the last 3 years).
✔️Italian language certificate (B1 level).
✔️Receipt of the €250 government fee (paid through postal payment).
✔️€16 revenue stamp.

3. Submit the Application

• The application must be submitted online through the Italian Ministry of the Interior portal (ALI – Citizenship).
• After registering, you must fill in the application form, upload the required documents and submit the request.

4. Waiting Period and Application Review

✔️ The Prefecture reviews the application and may request additional documents.
✔️ Processing times are generally up to 24 months (extendable to 36 months in certain cases).
✔️ During the process you may be invited for an interview or clarification.

5. Citizenship Decree

✔️ If the application is approved, you will receive the Italian Citizenship Decree.
✔️ Within 6 months of notification you must go to your Municipality to take the oath of allegiance to the Italian Republic.
✔️ After the oath, you officially become an Italian citizen!
