Driving with an expired licence is one of the most common mistakes among drivers. Many people only realize their licence has expired when they are stopped during a police check or when they look at the document by chance. But what actually happens if your licence has expired? Expired licence: what are the risks
Driving with an expired licence is a violation of the Italian Highway Code. The consequences can be significant:
- Administrative fine from €158 to €638
- Vehicle detention until a valid licence is presented
- In case of an accident with an expired licence, the insurance company may claim compensation from you for the damages caused
It is important to know that the licence does not immediately lose validity at midnight on the expiration date: Italian law provides a practical tolerance for the birthday itself, but from the following day the document is no longer valid for driving.
When does a driving licence expire?
The expiry date of the licence coincides with the holder's birthday, and varies depending on category and age:

The older the driver becomes, the more frequent renewals are required. This is because the main objective of the procedure is to verify that the driver is still physically and mentally fit to drive.
How to renew your licence: the steps
Renewing a driving licence requires a few mandatory steps:
1. Medical examination
This is the key step. You must visit a doctor authorized to issue medical certificates for driving licences (certified doctors, public health authorities, or authorized clinics), who will check:
- Visual acuity
- Hearing
- Basic cardiovascular and neurological parameters
- Absence of medical conditions that prevent driving
2. Payments
Two separate payments must be made:
- One to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport
- One as a stamp duty
3. Submission of the application and delivery of the new licence
Once the medical certificate has been obtained and the payments completed, the application is sent to the Civil Motorization Office. The new licence arrives within about 7 days.
Can I drive while waiting for the new licence?
Yes. After completing the medical examination and submitting the application, you receive a receipt that acts as a temporary licence, allowing you to drive within Italy while waiting for the final document.
