Good news for Brazilian citizens living in Italy: starting from April 28, 2025, it will be possible to convert a Brazilian driving licence into an Italian driving licence without taking driving exams. This is established by the bilateral agreement between Italy and Brazil, signed on July 15, 2024 and officially announced by the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.

Who can request the conversion?

The agreement applies to:

  • Brazilian citizens residing in Italy for less than 6 years
  • Holding a valid driving licence
  • The licence must not have been obtained after establishing residence in Italy
  • Licences already converted from non-recognized countries are excluded

Only categories A and B (motorcycles and cars) can be converted. The application also requires a medical certificate and compliance with the age requirements established by Italian law.

Agreement validity

The agreement will remain in force until April 28, 2030, unless renewed or modified.

How does the procedure work?

Applicants must provide:

  • Official translation of the Brazilian driving licence
  • Medical documentation
  • Bilingual form (Italian–Portuguese) for verification with Brazilian authorities

The Brazilian licence will be collected only when the Italian licence is issued and will later be returned to the Brazilian diplomatic authorities.
